Irish Passport — Renewal, Applications, Tracker & Processing Times

Whether you're renewing online, applying for a child's passport, or need one urgently — here's exactly what to do and how long it takes.

Two types of Irish passport

Ireland issues two types of travel document. You need to know which one you want before you apply — they're different products with different uses.

Passport book — the standard passport. Valid for 10 years for adults (16+) and 5 years for children under 16. Accepted for travel to all countries that accept Irish passports, including the USA, Canada, Australia, and beyond EU borders.

Passport card — credit-card sized, valid for 5 years for adults and 5 years for children. Can only be used for travel within the EU and EEA (including Switzerland and the UK). Cannot be used outside Europe. Cheaper and faster to get than the book, and handy if you travel mostly within Europe and want something that fits in your wallet.

You can hold both at the same time. Many people who travel frequently get both — the card for EU trips, the book for long-haul.

€75

Adult passport book (online)

€80 if applying via Passport Express at An Post. Fees current as of May 2026.

€30

Child passport book

Under 18. Same fee online and via Passport Express.

€35

Passport card

Adult. Valid for EU/EEA travel only. Faster to process than the book.

Online vs Passport Express — which to use

Passport Online (passportonline.dfa.ie) The fastest and cheapest route for most people. Fully online — you upload your photo and documents, pay by card, and the passport arrives by post. Available to:

  • Adults renewing an Irish passport
  • First-time adult applicants (in some circumstances — you need a valid Irish identity document or a Verified Identity already on the system)
  • Irish citizens abroad renewing their passport
  • Adults applying for a passport card

Passport Express (at An Post) The paper-based route. You fill in a form, attach physical documents and photos, and bring it to an An Post branch. An Post then sends it to the Passport Office. Add 15 working days to normal processing time estimates compared to online. Required for:

  • Most child applications and renewals (under 18)
  • First-time applicants who can't verify identity online
  • People who don't have an Irish email address or suitable identity document for the online system

If you're renewing as an adult and your previous passport is 10 years or less out of date, Passport Online is almost always faster and cheaper. Use it.

Processing times — as of May 2026

Processing times change. The figures below are as of May 2026. Always check the DFA's current estimates at passportonline.dfa.ie or dfa.ie/passport before making travel plans.

| Application type | Typical processing time | |-----------------|------------------------| | Passport Online (adult renewal) | 10 working days | | Passport Online (first-time adult) | 10–15 working days | | Passport Express (child renewal) | 15–20 working days | | Passport Express (first-time application) | 20–25 working days | | Emergency appointment (Dublin/Cork office only) | Same day or next day |

Peak season warning: March to June is the busiest period. Processing times can double overnight. If you're travelling in summer, apply by April at the latest. Subscribe below and we'll alert you if times spike significantly.

Working days means Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. A "10 working day" process takes two full calendar weeks minimum.

The passport tracker

Once you've applied, you can track your application at passporttracking.dfa.ie. You'll need your application number (from the confirmation email).

The tracker shows these stages:

| Stage | What it means | |-------|--------------| | Application received | Your application is in the system. No action needed. | | Application being processed | Currently being reviewed. This is where most of the wait time sits. | | Passport printed | Your passport has been issued and is being prepared for posting. | | Passport posted | Dispatched by post. Allow 2–3 working days for delivery. |

The tracker updates overnight, not in real time. If it hasn't moved for several days and your travel date is approaching, you can contact the Passport Office directly through dfa.ie.

By situation — what to do

Renewing as an adult Use Passport Online. You'll need your old passport, a digital photo (the system tells you exactly what's required), and a credit or debit card. Processing is typically 10 working days. You don't need to attend an office or post anything.

Renewing a child's passport Use Passport Express at An Post. Both parents must consent — if one parent is unavailable, there is a specific process for that. You'll need a witnessed declaration from someone who knows the child. Bring original documents to An Post, not photocopies.

First-time adult applicant If you're an Irish citizen who has never held an Irish passport, you may be able to apply online if you have a valid Irish identity document (Public Services Card, Irish driving licence). Otherwise, use Passport Express and include your birth certificate and proof of Irish citizenship.

Lost or stolen passport Report the loss or theft through passportonline.dfa.ie before applying for a new one. You'll then apply for a new passport — most people can do this online. If your passport was stolen, you may also want to report it to An Garda Siochana, particularly if it was stolen abroad.

Emergency — travelling within 3 working days Go directly to the Passport Office in Dublin (Mount Street) or Cork (South Mall). You must book an appointment through passportonline.dfa.ie first. Walk-ins are not accepted. Bring all required documents plus proof of imminent travel (booking confirmation, boarding pass, etc.). Emergency appointments are limited, book as early as possible.

Useful things to know

Passport card for EU travel If you travel frequently within the EU, the passport card is worth considering alongside your book. At €35, it's significantly cheaper and processes faster. Valid for EU, EEA, and Switzerland. Also accepted in the UK.

Large passport If you travel extensively outside Europe and fill passports quickly, you can apply for a large passport (extra pages). Same price as standard, available through Passport Online.

Irish citizens abroad Passport Online works internationally. If you're living outside Ireland, you can apply from anywhere — just follow the standard online process. Delivery times to international addresses vary.

Dual nationality Ireland permits dual nationality. You don't need to surrender any other passport to hold an Irish one. There is no declaration required.

Born outside Ireland — grandparent route If you're claiming Irish citizenship through a grandparent, you may need to register in the Foreign Births Register first. This is a separate process from the passport application and must be completed before you can apply. The FBR can take several months. See dfa.ie for the full process.

Witnessed declaration for child renewals When renewing a child's passport, a parent or guardian must sign a declaration witnessed by someone who knows the child, such as a teacher, doctor, or solicitor. The An Post branch staff will check all documentation is in order.

Most useful link: the passport tracker

Once you've applied, bookmark passporttracking.dfa.ie. Check it after 5 working days. It won't update in real time, but it will tell you exactly where your application is in the process. Most people check it far too early — the system needs a few working days to show any movement.

Common questions about Irish passports

How long does it take to renew an Irish passport?

As of May 2026, adult renewals through Passport Online typically take 10 working days (two calendar weeks). Child renewals via Passport Express take 15–20 working days. Processing times increase significantly in peak season (March to June) and can double without warning. Always check the current estimates at passportonline.dfa.ie before planning around a travel date.

Can I track my Irish passport application?

Yes. Go to passporttracking.dfa.ie and enter your application number from the confirmation email. The tracker shows four stages: received, being processed, printed, and posted. It updates overnight rather than in real time. If you applied online, your status should update within 2 working days of submission.

What is the difference between a passport book and a passport card?

A passport book is the standard passport, valid for travel to any country. A passport card is credit-card sized, cheaper (€35 vs €75), and only valid for travel within the EU and EEA (including Switzerland and the UK). You can hold both at the same time. The card is popular for people who travel mostly within Europe and want something more convenient than carrying a full passport book.

How do I renew my child's passport in Ireland?

Child passport renewals (under 18) are done through Passport Express at an An Post branch. You'll need: the child's current passport, two recent photos, a witnessed declaration signed by a parent or guardian and witnessed by someone who knows the child (teacher, doctor, etc.), and the renewal fee (€30). Both parents must consent unless there are exceptional circumstances. Bring original documents, not photocopies.

What do I do if I need an emergency passport?

If you're travelling within 3 working days, you need an emergency appointment at the Passport Office in Dublin (Mount Street) or Cork (South Mall). Book the appointment through passportonline.dfa.ie. Walk-ins are not accepted. Bring all required documents and proof of imminent travel. Appointments are limited, so book immediately.

Can I apply for an Irish passport online for the first time?

In some cases, yes. First-time adult applicants can apply online if they have a valid Irish identity document (Public Services Card or Irish driving licence) that allows the system to verify their identity. If you don't have a suitable identity document, you'll need to use Passport Express and include your birth certificate and proof of citizenship.

Do I need to cancel my other passport if I get an Irish one?

No. Ireland permits dual nationality and there is no requirement to surrender or cancel any other passport when getting an Irish one. You can hold both passports simultaneously.
